Justin D. Hein, Managing Attorney of the Sacramento Office of Simas & Associates, Ltd., is participating in the Sacramento Executive “Lock-Up” of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on July 17, 2013. As a participant, Justin has been set with a “bail” of $3,200.00 – an amount he is to try to raise from family, friends, colleagues, and members of the community.
“I must be honest – I was anonymously volunteered to participate in this event,” explained Justin. “Upon reading about the event and the cause it supports, of course I was happy to help.”
The Lock-Up is MDA’s premier fundraising program. These high-profile events occur all across the country at various times throughout the year. Business and community leaders agree to be “put behind bars for good,” where they reach out for donations that will go toward their “bail.”
“Granted, I was a little dismayed when I saw that my bail had been set so high – my initial reaction was, ‘hey, hey, what am I accused of doing here!?!’,” explained Hein. “But then I was floored with the initial wave of support.”
Justin has already raised $660.00, which represents over 20% of his bail. This netted him 2 tickets to Great America and eligible for the Independence Day contest – for a tray of sweets. “I am not sure, but I also thinks this means that avoid actually getting handcuffed and hauled away as part of the promotion,” chimed in Justin.
More importantly, the amount raised assist the MDA in providing lifesaving research as well as a nationwide network of medical clinics. It also provides funding for accessible summer camp experiences to individuals and families affected by neuromuscular diseases. Many people do not know that many of these diseases, such as ALS (i.e. Lou Gehrig’s Disease) have no known treatment, let alone no known cure. As a result, dollars not only go to research but also to provide actual care to its victims.
And Justin still may have to serve some time behind bars and in stripes. The event culminates in a luncheon where those “jailed” get to meet each other and those individuals who will benefit from the efforts through the MDA. “Again, I am happy to do anything I can help and am looking forward to meeting those afflicted to provide encouragement and a positive perspective as we try to put these muscle diseases away for good,” stated Justin.
